Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Australian Student visa (subclass 500)?

The Student visa (subclass 500) is the main visa for international students taking an eligible full-time course in Australia. Applicants generally need a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), proof of funds and to meet the genuine student requirement. The application fee is AUD 2,500 for most main applicants from 1 July 2026.

How much money do I need to show?

The current minimum living-cost requirement for a single student is AUD 29,710 per year, on top of tuition fees and travel costs (AUD 2,000 for applicants outside Australia). This is a visa minimum. Your actual expenses may be higher depending on your city and lifestyle.

Can I work while studying?

Eligible student visa holders can generally work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session, and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. Master's by research and PhD students are generally not subject to the 48-hour limit. Always follow the work conditions on your visa.

Is IELTS the only English test accepted?

Many universities accept IELTS, but it isn't the only option. PTE Academic, TOEFL and Cambridge English are also commonly accepted, and some students may be exempt depending on their background. The required score varies by course and university, so check the latest requirement before applying.

What are the post-study work options?

Eligible graduates can apply for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485). The Post-Study Work stream typically allows 2–3 years depending on qualification, and the general age limit is 35 or under, with exceptions including some Master's by research and doctorate graduates. Studying in Australia does not automatically lead to permanent residence. Eligibility depends on factors such as age, occupation, English level, experience and points.

What scholarships are available?

Options include Australia Awards (Master's, fully funded), the Research Training Program (Master's by research and doctorate, may cover tuition and a living allowance), Destination Australia (up to AUD 15,000 a year for regional study), Monash International Leadership Scholarship (up to 100% of tuition) and University of Sydney international research scholarships. University-specific awards range from about AUD 2,000 to 30,000+. Amounts, eligibility and deadlines change each year, so check the latest rules before applying.

What are the admission requirements?

Requirements vary by university and course, but generally include a recognised qualification, the required grades or GPA, any prerequisite subjects, and proof of English proficiency. Some Master's, MBA and professional programmes also ask for work experience, while many Master's courses don't. Typical documents are transcripts, a valid passport, test scores, a statement of purpose and recommendation letters. Start preparing 6–12 months before your intake.
